Artisan chocolatiers, food producers, chocoholics and local guests descended on the beautiful village of Killyleagh at the weekend for the biennial Finnebrogue Artisan Hans Sloane Chocolate and Fine Food Festival. With over 6,000 guests taking over the picturesque grounds of Killyleagh Castle throughout the weekend, the two-day event honoured the festival’s namesake, Sir Hans Sloane, who was born in Killyleagh and is considered locally to be an ‘unsung hero’ of Northern Ireland, while also raising money for a ‘sweet’ cause, with proceeds benefitting Cancer Fund for Children.
The festival, which began on the evening of Friday 14th September with the Hans Sloane Chocolate Ball, welcomed guests from across the UK, Ireland, and wider Europe, to enjoy family entertainment while sampling chocolatey treats from some of Northern Ireland’s leading artisan producers.
“The whole festival weekend from Friday through to Sunday was a huge success, with a record number of guests travelling from far and wide, arriving in Killyleagh to enjoy the two-day Hans Sloane Chocolate and Fine Food Festival. Most importantly, through kind donations throughout the weekend we are delighted to have raised significant funds for our festival charity Cancer Fund for Children.” said Meave Davison, festival committee member.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairman, Councillor Mark Murnin commented on the success of this year’s festival saying, “We are delighted that the Finnebrogue Artisan Hans Sloane Chocolate and Fine Food Festival was once again a huge success for all involved, from Killyleagh and beyond. Newry, Mourne and Down District Council are proud to support such a unique event which celebrates the long tradition of exceptional produce, artisan food and of course the great heritage in our local area. The festival has acted as a beacon throughout the weekend drawing guests from near and far and benefitting our local economy including local businesses, guesthouses and artisan producers.”
