McGuigan Wines restores craft to the wine category with innovative project

McGuigan Wines, four-time international winemaker of the year, is announcing the launch of an innovative new range; the Single Batch Project.

At McGuigan, when each wine parcel is brought into the winery it is allocated a unique code, separated from other batches and treated independently to ensure cleanliness and purity of winemaking. It’s this meticulous approach to the quality and integrity of each parcel that demonstrates this celebrated winemaker’s commitment that the last bottle of Single Batch Project from each vintage will always taste as good as the first.

The UK is seeing a boom in the appetite for ‘craft’ products, and with wine being the original craft beverage, McGuigan Wines wanted to share its own dedication and expertise when making this Chardonnay and Shiraz. Sourcing grapes from its own vineyards in Australia’s most celebrated winemaking state, South Australia, each Single Batch Project label features the actual winery batch number and yeast strain used at the McGuigan winery; elements that remain constant throughout each vintage.

The Single Batch Chardonnay 2017 (batch 17CHA#11X1) benefited from a fantastic vintage in South Australia; with a warm growing season that delivered wines with intense fruit and a beautiful natural acidity. The citrus and stone fruit aromas are underpinned by light oak notes, and the palate offers flavours of peach, nectarine and ripe pears. The wine is the perfect food match for a range of dishes; from creamy pasta, to grilled fish, to chicken casserole.

The second in the series, the Single Batch Shiraz 2017 (batch 17SHl#18X1), was crafted from the same first-class vintage to produce a smooth and full-bodied wine. The nose offers aromas of dark fruits and spice, underpinned by notes of charred French oak, whilst the palate showcases rich flavours of plum and cherry balanced with soft tannins and oak. This food-friendly wine is hugely versatile, and can be paired with a variety of red meat or pasta dishes.

Chief winemaker at McGuigan Wines, Neil McGuigan said, ‘The Single Batch Project embodies McGuigan’s commitment to making the wine the hero. This ethos underpins every stage of the winemaking process: from sourcing the grapes and selecting the right parcels, to crafting the wine with care and precision, ensuring the last bottle tastes just as good as the first. This commitment and stellar 2017 vintage conditions have combined to produce wines that we are hugely proud of and feel are excellent examples of these two quintessential Australian varietals.’

McGuigan’s Single Batch Project will be distributed by United Wine Merchants and will be available to buy from all good independent retailers in Northern Ireland from June.
