Foodies find local gastro week a real ‘treat’

(L to R) Alderman Allan Ewart, MBE, Chairman of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council’s Development Committee, attending the Hillsborough Gastro Trail as part of Treat Week 2018. He is joined by Chef Derek Patterson, The Plough Inn & Vintage Rooms, Mrs Denise Ewart, Andrew Graham, Manager of The Hillside, and Donal Rogan, Director of Service Transformation at Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council.

Treat Week 2018, Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council’s celebration of eateries across the Council area, has drawn to a close with over 50 eateries, restaurants, cafes and gastropubs spanning from Moira to Dundonald taking part.

The event offered opportunities for exploration and discovery, often highlighting the superb local ingredients chefs have on their doorstep and how our forward-thinking restaurants are always pushing culinary boundaries to stay ahead of the game. Furthermore, with an array of special menus, themed evenings, family days, and one-off event offers, Treat Week 2018 showcased that Lisburn & Castlereagh’s eating out scene has something to appeal to all palates, budgets and occasions – whether it is simply a catch up over a coffee, weekend breakfast, casual lunch, family outing or special occasion.

Treat Week kicked off with Chefs Danni Barry, Derek Patterson, Andy Turner and Stephen Jeffers bringing a flavour of Lisburn & Castlereagh’s to St George’s Market with interactive chef demos. Further masterclasses and ‘Meet the Producer’ evenings hosted by the businesses, took place throughout the week. A highlight of Treat Week this year were the Gastro Trails in Hillsborough and Moira where three businesses in each village collaborated to present an evening of food and drink on separate evenings.

Speaking about the initiative, Alderman Allan Ewart, MBE, Chairman of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council’s Development Committee, said: “I am delighted with the success of Treat Week which was greatly supported by residents and visitors – despite the weather that Beast from the East and Storm Emma threw at us! Treat Week is an ideal opportunity to showcase that the Lisburn Castlereagh area boasts a diverse offering of excellent quality eating establishments ranging from cafes, family dining and entertainment to gourmet restaurants. We would hope that collaborations such as the Gastro Trails which help promote the villages as foodie destinations, would be a legacy of the event and something that the Council is keen to encourage.”
