Belfast International Airport is predicting a sizable boost for Northern Ireland tourism with the new Ryanair Berlin route which commenced yesterday.

The airport says advance bookings on the airline’s first direct European destination from its new Belfast base show how much German visitors are looking forward to enjoying the Northern Ireland experience.

The carrier says there is strong demand from German visitors who are booked on its inbound service from Berlin to Belfast International Airport.

Belfast International Airport Managing Director, Graham Keddie, says Berlin shows what can be achieved with direct air access to important tourist markets.

“Germany is one of the biggest outbound tourist markets in the World and for far too long, we weren’t able to attract visitors directly to Northern Ireland,” said Keddie. “At no cost to the taxpayer, Ryanair will deliver thousands of German tourists in its first full year of operation.

“The airline’s return to Northern Ireland is an enormous boost for the local economy. It says it will carry one million passengers on all eleven routes in will operate between now and autumn 2017 and that’s great news for our tourism industry.”

The Economy Minister who also holds the tourism portfolio, Simon Hamilton MLA, welcomed the commencement of the Berlin service and said he looked forward to further growth.

Minister Hamilton said: “Air connectivity is an important driver for economic growth. Connecting with new and strategic destinations such as Berlin will be a huge boost for the business and tourism markets.  With air passenger numbers at our airports continuing to grow, this new Ryanair Berlin route is further evidence of a returning confidence to the Northern Ireland travel market.”

Ryanair’s Sales and Marketing Executive Lisa Buckley said: “We are pleased to celebrate the launch of our new Berlin and Milan Bergamo routes, which are the first of our 10 new routes to operate from Belfast this winter. Our Berlin route will operate 3 times weekly, and our Milan route will operate on a twice weekly basis, while other new Ryanair routes this winter include Alicante, Gdansk, Krakow, Lanzarote, Malaga, Milan, Tenerife, Warsaw & Wroclaw.

To celebrate the launch of our first Belfast winter routes, we are releasing seats for sale across our European network at fares.
