Hercules Brewing Company, the first craft brewery to open in Belfast for almost 160 years, has won a gold medal at the World Beer Challenge 2016 for its small batch brew lager, Yardsman Lager. It was the only company in Ireland to be recognised at the prestigious ceremony in Estroil, Portugal.

From 491 beers from across the world entering the competition, only 375 of the entries got through to the judging stage of the competition and only 24 gold medals were awarded. Yardsman almost topped the leader board with the second highest score; only being pipped to the top slot by the world-renowned Boston Beer Company which produces Sam Adams.

Hercules Brewing Company’s other brew, Yardsman Belfast Pale Ale, received a silver medal as one of only 50 beers selected for silver, ranking in the top 10% of the beers to be awarded medals.

“I am delighted Yardsman has picked up these global awards, it is a fantastic acknowledgement of the quality and taste of our local beers and a tribute to the brewing excellence here in Belfast,” said Niall McMullan, international drinks industry veteran and creator of Yardsman beers.

“In recent years, there has been a worldwide demand from consumers for craft beers, so I am proud to have created this unique craft brand that pays homage to local people who worked in the Belfast industries of linen making, ship building, distilling and brewing – people who were experts in their craft.

“Since re-launching Hercules Brewing Company last year, the popularity of Yardsman lager, ale and stout has continued to grow and we are now distributing Province-wide in all of the best restaurants, bars and off licenses across Northern Ireland and GB. We have also had a lot of interest from international markets and this will become a focus for the company moving forward.”
