Time team’s Belgian getaway

It sounds like the perfect job: learning how to appreciate one of the finest and most historic Belgian beers.  Not altogether surprisingly, it is a task that really appealed to Cookstown women Sarah Barry, Natalie Hughes, Bridgeen Campbell and Tanya Dunseath

The quartet who are part of the busy team at Time nightclub and bar in Cookstown recently took time out to welcome the arrival in Northern Ireland of Heverlee Belgian Lager.  It proved time well spent, for the knowledge they acquired earned them an all-expenses-paid trip to Brussels!

The competition, promoted by Tennent’s NI, was open to bar staff right across Northern Ireland but the knowledge and flair shown by the Time team wowed the judges. Congratulating the winners, Sarah Shimmons, Beer Marketing Manager for Tennent’s NI, said, “The story of Heverlee is certainly worth celebrating.

“Heverlee has been recreated using ingredients and techniques from hundreds of years ago, redeveloped following research at Belgium’s largest abbey by Joris Brams, a Leuven-brewer born. Brams was given unique access to records in the ancient Abbey of the order of Premontre in Belgium, and working with the monks and a local brewer, he used descriptions of the ancient beer to create Heverlee, which uses barley, hops and a much slower, more traditional brewing process.

“That strong history, coupled with the unique taste of Heverlee, has clearly inspired the bar staff at Time and they, in turn, have been inspiring the quality-conscious Lager afficianados of Cookstown.  Hopefully, their prize trip to Belgium added further to their specialist knowledge!”

Delighted to have won the trip, Sarah Barry, Bar Manager at Time said, “We were all thrilled at the prospect of travelling to Belgium and being treated as real vips: it was a lovely opportunity to relax after the rush of Christmas and New Year.  Winning was a great surprise and a fantastic reward, as well as recognition for Time’s policy of really getting to know its products so that we can give our customers the best possible experience.  Beers are just as complex and interesting as wines and, as Heverlee demonstrates, it’s worthwhile getting to know what lies behind that amber nectar!”
